How Much is Motorcycle Insurance in Oregon?

If you’re a first-time motorcycle buyer in the Portland area, you likely have a lot of questions about what you need to do before you can hit the road. In addition to getting your motorcycle license, you have to have motorcycle insurance in Oregon to ride legally. So, how much is motorcycle insurance going to cost, and what process do you need to follow to obtain it? Get the answers you need in this guide from the team at Timber Town Harley-Davidson!

Is Motorcycle Insurance Required?

According to Oregon state law, all motorcycle owners in Salem and the surrounding areas must obtain motorcycle liability insurance. This coverage will assist you in paying to treat injuries or replace damaged property.

How much motorcycle insurance covers in the event of a collision will vary depending on the type of damage incurred, but Oregon riders must—at a minimum—hold the following coverage:

Bodily injury and property damage liability

  • $25,000 per person
  • $50,000 per crash for bodily injury to others
  • $20,000 per crash for damage to others’ property

Personal injury protection

  • $15,000 per person

Uninsured motorist

  • $25,000 per person
  • $50,000 per crash for bodily injury

Optional Motorcycle Insurance

Only liability motorcycle insurance is required by law, but you may elect to add other coverage types for more comprehensive protection. While liability insurance covers property damage and injuries to others when you are at fault, additional types of motorcycle insurance coverage can help you pay for:

  • Damage to your own motorcycle
  • Personal medical coverage
  • Uninsured/uninsured motorist coverage
  • Vandalism
  • Roadside assistance
  • Rental reimbursement

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost?

How much your motorcycle insurance costs will depend on several factors, including:

  • The type of motorcycle you ride
  • Where you live
  • Your age and gender
  • The brand, age, model, and mileage of your motorcycle
  • Your estimated yearly mileage
  • The type of recreational or professional riding you do
  • Your personal credit history

Generally, motorcycle owners in the Albany and Lebanon areas will end up paying an amount between $500 and $600 per year (or between $40 and $80 per month).
